Malvern-based Ocugen closed a $22.5 million stock offering, pushing the amount raised by life sciences companies past $250 million this year.

Malvern-based Ocugen closed a $22.5 million stock offering last week, pushing the total amount raised by Philadelphia-area life sciences companies through private and public offerings over $250 million since the start of the year, writes John George for the Philadelphia Business Journal.

Ocugen sold 15 million shares of common stock at $1.50 per share, with the offering led by RTW Investments of New York.

The Chester County company said that the funds will support general corporate purposes, capital expenditures, and working capital, as well as OrthoCellix, its wholly owned subsidiary developing NeoCart, a product candidate acquired in 2019.

Bruce Peacock is a local life sciences entrepreneur and investor and former CEO of Adolor in Exton and Orthovita in Malvern. He said that the funding round signals the end of the so-called biotech winter, a four-year stretch where companies struggled to raise new capital, and the start of the even recovery period.

“We had a very prolonged bust period this time, but we are headed to ‘even’ where some, but not all companies will get financed – driven by their technology and product opportunity and a team that has had success before,” Peacock said.
